Another Student Newspaper Selects WoodWing: It s an Investment for the Future

September 22, 2008

Calling it “an investment for the future ” the Daily of the University of Washington has joined the growing ranks of student newspapers switching to WoodWing Software’s Smart Connection Enterprise editorial solution.

Founded in 1891 the Daily serves the University of Washington’s 31 000 undergraduate and 12 000 graduate students. It’s one of the most-honored student newspapers in the country earning the prestigious Apple Award this year as the best college newspaper in the country as named by the College Media Advisers organization. The Daily’s list of alumni includes several Pulitzer Prize winners.

Kristin Millis the Director of Student Publications at the Daily said that the newspaper was badly in need of an editorial system. “Before we installed Smart Connection Enterprise we didn’t have any editorial system ” Millis said. “We had been using folders and we were finding that quite often things would get lost. We really needed an editorial system.”

Millis and the Daily team began searching for an editorial solution but they feared it would be too costly to install one. Then they discovered Smart Connection Enterprise.

“What really sold me on WoodWing is that it works so well as a multi-media editorial system ” Millis said. “We needed something that would let us move our stories and content easily to the Web and Smart Connection Enterprise was perfect. We were thinking it might be too expensive to get an editorial system but it wasn’t that way at all. With WoodWing we realized it was really an investment for the future.”

Brian Kruger the CEO of WoodWing USA said that one of the reasons Smart Connection Enterprise has become increasingly popular with student newspapers is that it’s so easy to learn. “Student newspapers naturally have a lot of turnover so they really need a system that can be easily mastered ” Kruger said. “That’s one of the main benefits to Smart Connection Enterprise.”

Millis agreed. “Our staff was really surprised at how intuitive it is ” she said. “The training has gone extremely well and they’re really catching on quickly. The staff appreciates how easily they can control the workflow now and they also like that they can see the status of every story as it moves along. I’d say our experience with WoodWing has been very good.”
